You'll one of the first few people at the scene, and you'll be dealing with life or death situations. Being an EMT is not for everyone, but the field can be highly rewarding in many ways. Imagine yourself being at the scene of a gunshot victim or someone who's having a heart attack. You'll be there to give them life saving medical services.

In order to start your training courses, you'll need to at least have a high school diploma or a GED. If you haven't already gotten your high school diploma or GED, then there are many centers online that you can search for. Your local book store will have study guides available for the GED testing, if you do not have a high school diploma.

Once you have the high school diploma or GED documentation, you can begin your basic EMT training courses. Your courses and certification can be obtained from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians or the NREMT. In order to be an EMT, you have to be licensed. Your licensing requirements will depend on the state that you live in. Besides completing your EMT training courses, you'll also need to be physically strong, mentally and emotionally stable, and able to work in various weather.

Your basic EMT level will consist of EMT training courses that teach you how to manage a respiratory trauma, cardiac emergencies, bleeding and wounds. You'll also learn how to thoroughly and correctly assess the patient, so that he or she will have a high chance of survival during the transport phase to the hospital.

Your basic EMT training courses will also teach you how to use medical equipment, such as suction units, oxygen delivery systems, splints, heart monitors, intravenous fluid equipment and stretchers. Once you have graduated from your EMT training courses, you'll have to pass a written and practical examination from your state board. The second level of EMT training courses (EMT-Intermediate) will give you further training in handling equipment and also administering medications. You'll have an additional 30 to 350 hours of training. The last level is also known as paramedic. Paramedics usually have associate's or bachelor's degrees and have to learn anatomy and physiology.

There are many ways to train for being an EMT, especially if you're just starting out. No matter where you are located, you will always be able to have a good recession-proof job.
