Fluid warmers have not been a common piece of equipment during surgery until recent years. Operating rooms are equipped with special devices to provide specific types of patient care. These environments are completely sterile, and medical personnel are required to wear protective gear for the safety of the patient. Medical gear can include a gown, shoe covers, gloves, and masks. Without these protective items, germs may cause secondary infections or other problems which make the process more difficult. Every precaution is taken to ensure the operation goes smoothly and the patient does not experience additional discomfort. Anesthesia, medications, or other fluids are administered during the process. These items are essential to keep the patient under during treatment. They also keep them hydrated as well as reduce pain upon waking. Application of intravenous or IV sets must be implemented to provide all needed fluids. These substances often range well below body temperature. When they are introduced rapidly for surgery, the possibility for hypothermia development becomes more likely. Fluid warmers in operating room settings reduce the risk of this along with many other conditions. Using IV Warmers for Surgery Patients The typical process for operations is the same unless it is a medical emergency. Emergencies decrease the time allowed for preparing the operating room and limit available time for equipment setup. In planned surgery situations, the patient is wheeled into a prepared operating room either by wheelchair or a gurney. They are then moved to the operating table to be strapped down for surgery. At this point in the process, the patient will have monitoring equipment attached. An IV is set up to provide anesthesia or other fluids. During this time IV warmers can be used to heat the intravenous contents before bodily entry. This type of equipment is beneficial but until recently was not used due to time restrictions. Manufacturers have implemented technology which reduces warming times, setup processes, and makes them a beneficial treatment item during any operation. They may even be implemented for more hasty operations because time does not have to be taken away from necessary surgery processes. Disposable warmers are best because they can be transferred with the patient as they are sent to their post-surgery recovery room. Equipment designs provide the benefit of disposability and are portable due to battery power. Their weight has been reduced to allow easy transportation between rooms. Newer features make them highly convenient for use. These advancements have also made IV warmers a great tool during emergency response circumstances. Military combat treatment application, SWAT team, and Fire Department usage are some examples. Certain qualities make these tools convenient in an operating room. Elimination of wall power not only increases their portability but also decreases the number of wired items professionals must work around. Training has been significantly decreased to the enhanced usability of this particular equipment. Staff members can set a warmer up without difficulty and be warming the fluids in approximately one minute. This added functionality along with other enhancements has made fluid warmers in operating rooms an indispensable piece of equipment.
