Guidelines and Tips for Fire Emergency Preparation

In the past we have come across several incidents where accidents due to fire have caused people serious injuries. Many have even lost their lives, especially during Christmas and New Year when the whole world celebrates by lighting firecrackers in huge numbers. As such, it has become totally essential for each and every one of us to be aware and have the knowledge of what needs to be done when fire-related emergencies strike.

Tips for Fire Emergency Preparation

  • Teach your children the fire dos and don'ts and what precautions need to be taken to avoid accidents. Also tell them what should be done in case such fire emergencies happen. Several schools also impart knowledge to their students about activities that can help to avoid, as well as overcome fire related emergencies.

  • Identify the fire exits in your home; doors or windows are paramount to escaping during a fire.

  • Lay out a proper plan with respect to each room in your house and inform your children and other members of the family about it.

  • Choose a place outside your home where everyone can safely escape to, if a fire emergency arises.

  • Everyone in the house should memorize the path that leads to a safe evacuation point during a fire so that they can all reach it even without the help of others.

  • Be careful while opening doors and windows during a fire. A door through which you feel warm air coming out of, or if you see flames or smoke, should never be opened.

  • If your clothes are on fire, falling and rolling on the ground can help put them out.

  • The first number in your telephone diary should be emergency unit numbers so that it ensures that even children in the house can easily dial these numbers and inform the fire department about the emergency situation.

  • Installing smoke detectors in your home is a wise act. Regularly check and change their batteries as and when necessary.

  • Fire extinguishers should be present in the house. If you live in a huge home, then placing more than one fire extinguisher becomes necessary.

  • Avoid smoking inside the home; this has been the cause of many fire related accidents in the past, merely due to carelessness.

  • Make sure you keep matchboxes, gasoline, and other flammables out of the reach of children.

Prevention is always better than cure. And when it comes to fire emergencies, preparation is what you need to avoid experiencing this potentially life threatening incident.
