Unfortunately, many people have a misunderstanding of the concept "self defense weapons." Most people immediately think "taser gun" or "stun gun", and then negative media stories soon follow. This mindset is inaccurate and unnecessary because self defense weapons are anything but negative in nature. Rather, they have been developed and perfected so that they can be used for its sole purpose - to defense a person's safety when they are in imminent danger.
This is usually the result of misinformation by the media, singular perspective of a scenario or event, and lack of facts provided to the person observing the story. The media can be sneaky when they report a story; try watching the same story on different news channels. You will be shocked to see that the slightest variation of words or even vocal tone can change the interpretation of facts. This is why I feel the need to clarify a few things here.
It is easy to be told what to think, and we are all guilty of sometimes not thinking for ourselves. It's because the media can paint a situation in a way that is easy to comprehend and can be related to by viewers and readers. In regards to self defense, especially self defense weapons, most of the stories portrayed by news corporations are negative in nature, thus making a situation seem more dramatic than it really is.
More specifically, almost all news stories about stun guns, taser guns, and pepper spray, etc. are portrayed in a negative connotation. You hardly if ever hear about success stories of the use of these kinds of weapons when they are used properly. It is important to understand one thing: self defense weapons do not kill people, people who misuse them do. Furthermore, the term "self defense weapons" doesn't just refer to gun variations like stun guns, yet it also encompasses any and all products needed and/or used to protect someone or some thing.
For instance, the products that are legally available include, but are not limited to: animal repellents, bug detectors, child safety products, video cameras, and even computer software. But this type of knowledge is not necessarily provided to the public as liberally as it should. If it were, more people would understand the purpose and necessity for them to own their own defense product as a means of safeguarding what they value most. Luckily, by reading this article, you have already gained substantial insight into self defense product being falsely portrayed as lethal, harmful, or bad for society in general.
